REVENUE ROUNDS FIELD NOTE

What the labor pressure metric is really measuring

Moving beyond raw hourly cost to understand true capacity and burnout thresholds.

Payroll Context · May 19, 2026 · 6 min read

Labor pressure is not the same as labor cost. A team can be expensive because it is inefficient, or expensive because it is absorbing more work than the schedule can safely carry.

A better review pairs payroll with appointment complexity, provider availability, and support-staff load. That comparison shows whether the practice has a cost problem, a capacity problem, or a workflow problem.

The goal is not to trim labor blindly. The goal is to know when staffing is protecting revenue and when it is masking process friction.
